Ammonites are the fossilized remains of squid-like animals which existed from 420 million years ago until mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago.
It is believed that the structure of the shell was strong enough to withstand water pressure to 500 meters deep.
These fossils are from Madagascar.
Ammolite is a name given to the iridescent opal-like play of color as shown in these specimens. The effect of the light passing through the various layers of aragonite and conchiolin mineralization results in the intense reds, yellow orange green color flashes of Opal-like fire.
